Add to myYahoo! It's Independence Day, the day where George Washington went into Vietnam with a specials ops team and freed us from the oppression of the Australians. Glorious day for a student of history such as myself.
Essentially, this post is for those of you who are bored or too full of grilled foods and beer to move today and would like to sit down and discuss the team we all love so dearly. I'll direct you toward this selection of musings from the AJC's D. Orlando Ledbetter, who takes a brief look at some backup linebacking candidates. If you've got the stomach for it, give your sense of who might make the team and where they might be backing up. Personally, I think the safest guess is that Coy Wire makes the team and gets a lot of time, but then again, I'm not notorious for guessing anything correctly.
Happy 4th of July, everyone!

Add to myYahoo!Newschannel5.com is reporting that former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair was found dead outside a condo today. McNair had a gunshot wound to the head, and a woman, who is not his wife was also murdered at the schene.
It is beleaved that it was a double homicide or a homicide, then a suicide, but that can not be confirmed. The woman is rumored to be McNair's girlfriend. Police have not issued any arrests nor do they have any suspects.
Bud Adams on McNair; "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."
RIP

Steve McNair through each stage of his illustrious career.
NewsChannel5.com in Nashville is reporting that former Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair has been found slain, a victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The incident was originally reported as a murder-suicide, but now has been changed to ruled as a double homicide.
"We do not know the circumstances related to the death," Don Aaron, information director for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said. "We received a call of persons injured inside one of the condominiums. When police officers arrived in response to that call, we found two individuals that had been shot to death inside the residence: one female, one male. We now know that the male deceased is Steve McNair."
A female victim was also found by McNair's side.
More information to follow as it is reported.
McNair was a former first round pick of the Houston Oilers in 1995. After playing for the Houston and later Tennessee franchises he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens where he played for two years.
Steve McNair was a class-act, and is a huge loss not only for the NFL community, but for the world simply as a human being.
"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Tennessee Titans owner K.S. "Bud" Adams, Jr. said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."
McNair was only 36 years old.
The woman has been "tentatively identified" and when the information is known, her next of kin will be notified, then the press.
No one is yet in custody for the killings.
UPDATES: The mystery woman has been identified as Sahel Kazemi, a 20-year old woman living in Nashville.
Two days prior to the incident, Kazemi had been stopped for DUI, and was arrested for failing to take a breathalyzer. The black Escalade she was driving was registered in both her and McNair's names.
The police also confirmed that Mechelle McNair, Steve's wife, is not a suspect.
"Mrs. McNair is obviously very distraught," Aaron said during a briefing televised live on CNN. "Police chaplains have visited Mechelle McNair. At this juncture, we do not believe she is involved. We have not ruled anything out. We may be leaning a certain way, but we have not ruled anything out."
Police also said that they had not made a connection between McNair's death and the fact that a short time beforehand a 20-year old (same age as Kazemi), walked up to McNair at a restaraunt, accused him of slipping her a roofie and said that her boyfriend would kill him.
Also, Mechelle McNair had told a local news station that she had not heard from her husband in a few days.
While it is being assumed that Kazemi is his girlfriend, let's not be so hasty to jump to conclusions. There is no proof of a relationship at this point.
Also, the Tenneseean is now saying it is an apparent murder-suicide.

Add to myYahoo! We may have an addition to our NFC West discussion later today. For now though, I thought I'd wish everyone a Happy Independence Day. Hopefully everybody can enjoy some quality barbeque and fireworks. And if you're not American, well, enjoy some BBQ anyways!
In the meantime, if you get a chance, check out the 2009 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. It airs on ESPN at 9am pacific, noon eastern. The Bay Area's own Joey Chestnut looks to retain the mustard belt he won from Takeru Kobayashi last year. Happy Independence Day!

Add to myYahoo!Hope your Fourth is a great one. Anyone got any cool traditions? I'll be spending the day at the beach with the fiancee, trying desperately to avoid a sunburn.
As an added bonus, I'd like you to follow the jump for a visit from someone "special."

Enjoy your grill outs, family gatherings, and (most importantly) shooting ancient Chinese rockets off into the sky and watching them explode in a cascade of colorful sparks.
Oh, and make sure you are careful with your fireworks. They can, like, blow up in your face, and stuff.
Happy 4th, everyone! GO COLTS!

Happy 4th of July, BCC! I hope everyone is having fun and enjoying their three day weekend. Two hundred and thirty three years ago, a group of Southern Plantation owners and rich New England merchants decided that they could run this chunk of land better than the King and Parliament. Today, those thirteen colonies have grown from coast to coast and a global presence. Take care, and hey, only a month until Training Camp!

Add to myYahoo!Yes, I used that same video last 4th of July. . .and, yes, it's every bit as awesome this year as it was last year.
Today the greatest experiment in the history of the world turns 233 years old. I'm proud as hell to be a part of it, and even more proud to be able to serve it on a daily basis. I have the ability to say what I want, when I want, wherever I want without fear of being dragged into jail or executed for my words. Not just about Vikings football, obviously, but about any subject at all.
I realize that not everybody is in love with this concept. Not everybody is in love with the American military. Frankly, there are some people that hate both of those things, whether they're right here at home or overseas. That's an opinion that they're entitled to, and a feeling that they're entitled to express.
Just as I have the freedom, on this or any other day, to tell those people to go screw themselves.
Thanks to what happened 233 years ago today, I currently hold the two greatest jobs in the world. . .waking up every morning and putting my Air Force uniform on, and coming home to talk about Vikings football with all of you folks. Life doesn't get any better than this, and there isn't another place where I could be given that opportunity.
I've got a Colors detail to do for Honor Guard at noon today over at the Edgewater Mall in Biloxi (if any of you are in the area. . .it's part of the Bike Week festivities), and at some point later today I'll be back with some random Vikings thoughts and (possibly) some more info about the Podcast. Until then, enjoy your 4th of July, and practice good fireworks safety. . .remember, it's harder to comment here at DN if you're missing fingers, after all.
