Lions Release Receiver, Add Tackle

John Niyo is reporting via twitter that the Detroit Lions have released wide receiver John Standeford and signed defensive tackle Landon Cohen off of their practice squad. Standeford was the Lions fourth receiver with Calvin Johnson injured.

Now that Johnson is healthy, the Lions had no need to carry Standeford on their roster. Cohen will add depth at defensive tackle. Standeford started four games with the Lions in 2008, and played in nine games.

Cohen started some in 2008, but that team managed to lose every game they played. Cohen spent time with the Lions and the Oakland Raiders this offseason. Landon also goes by "Joe".

Various upcoming 49ers promotions and events

Every so often I get press releases sent by the 49ers publicity and community relations folks.  Professional sports teams are of course very active in getting folks out to the stadium.  However, they also mix in a variety of other promotions for the simple purpose of getting publicity for the team.  Obviously minor league teams go crazy with promotions, but even the highest level of teams mix in fun promotions.

The 49ers are just as active with these kinds of promotions as other teams.  The team has a couple of these promotions coming up and I thought it was worth mentioning for folks that will be attending home games at any point this season.

Early Fan of the Game
The 49ers will be rewarding fans on a random basis for entering the stadium prior to 45 minutes before kickoff by way of a new program acknowledging "Early Fans of the Games."  Fans who enter the stadium early have the opportunity to be selected to receive 49ers rewards ranging from seat upgrades to food and beverages vouchers to pregame field passes.

49ers representatives will be circulating throughout the stadium and at entry gates selecting fans who enter early to receive these complimentary rewards. Some lucky fans will also be recognized on the Video Boards each game.  This particular promotion kicks off tomorrow against the Titans.  I'd imagine the team is looking to cut down on the fan traffic coming through the gates close to kickoff.  Delay in getting into a stadium is one of the bigger complaints fans tend to have.  This kind of incentive to get in early could help remedy that issue.

Largest Northern California Tailgate
The 49ers and Safeway will be hosting a 20,000 square foot tailgate party prior to tomorrow's game from 10am to kickoff at 1:15pm.  Anybody attending the game is allowed to attend the tailgate, which will be taking place at Candlestick Park’s interior parking lot, near letter pole "R" – just outside of entrance gate E.

The event will include free food, a media room with ten large screen televisions and large couches, a free lock room souvenir picture for those in attendance, and a variety of interactive games.  Apparently Safeway has done this in other cities, so hopefully that means they've got the process perfected.

We have a bit more after the jump...

Kids entertainment
The 49ers are partnering with Dreamstar Properties, Inc, to provide its character entertainment services at the 49ers "Faithful City" prior to all 49ers home games throughout the 2009 season.  Faithful City is an area at Candlestick Park where families can enjoy interactive games in addition to appearances by the 49ers mascot Sourdough Sam and the San Francisco 49er’s Gold Rush Cheerleading team.

Dreamstar Parties has customized special activities from its signature character service for 49ers games to include face and hair painting featuring team designs.  Dreamstar Parties was signed to perform at all pre/regular/post season games throughout the 2009 season. Performances in the "Faithful City" will begin when gates open (three hours prior to kick off) and run up until 15 minutes before opening kick-off.

Community Relations Events
The 49ers have developed their theme for November community relations events: Respect for Family.  During the month of November, the 49ers will focus on spending time in the community to demonstrate respect for families through various events across the Bay Area.

Throughout November, the 49ers will participate in several community-related, hands-on volunteer projects in the Bay Area.  The featured event of the month will take place on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, when the team will participate in Serving Thanksgiving Meals at the Ray and Joan Kroc Salvation Army Corps Community Center and Railton Place in San Francisco. Players and their families will be serving a Thanksgiving meal to youth who have aged out of the foster care system as well as chronically homeless adults, veterans, and low-income seniors.

On November 3, the 49ers will participate in The Red & Gold 52 for 49ers Card Game Tournament with Seniors. At this event, residents of the Valley Village Senior Center in Santa Clara will play card games with current and former 49ers. Games included are Spades, Hearts/Crazy Nines/Golf, and Go Fish. Prizes will be awarded to all who participate.  I have to say, it's events like these that make me think it won't be half bad being old!

On November 17, 2009, the team will participate in Stocking the Food Bank at the San Francisco Food Bank. Players and their families will help sort Thanksgiving food and load the items into vehicles for delivery to needy families in San Francisco.

Happy Birthday to Me

It is still possible to enjoy the Redskins in 2009

This past Monday 2 November 2009 your author turned forty years old, tonight, Saturday 7 November 2009 we are celebrating, my excellent wife arranged for a huge party with about fifty guests, a keg, a bourbon tasting and of course the entire house it littered with somewhat embarrassing childhood pictures of me.

Our neighbor makes cakes and the masterpiece above is her contribution to the festivities, a Redskins themed cake surrounded by ten Redskin themed cupcakes, a pyramid of another twenty Redskins cupcakes sits just to camera right.

Enjoy your Saturday night, I will be watching the game tomorrow from the couch with a big bottle of gatorade.

Packers Lose Spitz For Season

Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel is reporting that the Green Bay Packers have placed their starting center, Jason Spitz on injured reserve. The team promoted receiver Biren Ealy from their practice squad to fill his spot.

According to the Journal sentinel, Spitz was suffering from back spasms. Ealy was signed to the Packers practice squad last week after Jake Allen was signed to the active roster. Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson, and Brett Swain are all dinged up.

Scott Wells will likely replace Spitz at center. Spitz's contract expires at the end of the season, and this injury could hurt his position for getting a new deal signed. Ealy will likely be the Packers fourth or fifth receiver this week.

Opponent Series History Week 9: ATL vs WAS

Gang, I'll be honest. It ain't pretty. To demonstrate how utterly ugly our series history is against the Redskins, here's a chart:

Redskinschart_medium

The X axis is the game number, the Y axis is the score differential. A negative score differential (see below 0 on X axis) indicates a loss. Yeah, it's that bad. Out of twenty-one games, we've won only five. The 'Skins have won fifteen. In '67 (game 2 on the chart), we somehow managed to tie with them, so at least that game's not hanging out in our L column...

The Facts:

The Cincinnati Bengals should think about lower
ticket prices to close the home schedule

For the third time this year, the Bengals need help selling out Sunday's game. On Friday afternoon, while the deadline approached, Local 12, the Bengals and Kroger worked together to sellout the remaining tickets available to assure that the game will be broadcasted in the Cincinnati market. Kroger and Local 12 were in large part why the Bengals were seen on local television during opening weekend against the Denver Broncos.

Kroger is planning on giving away 250 pairs of tickets "members of the military" which will be distributed "at Kroger stores in Hyde Park (10-11 a.m.); Lebanon, Union and Fairborn (11 a.m.-noon) and Anderson Towne Center (1-2 p.m.) today."

Bengals Executive Vice President Katie Blackburn writes in a statement:

“We are thrilled with the response from our fans, Kroger and Local12, and we are pleased that Bengals fans across the region can watch our game on Sunday. We have great fans and their vocal support will give us a real home field advantage for this big AFC North game. We are especially pleased that we will have so many members of the Military on hand.”

If the Bengals can not sell a game out, against a division rival while in first place, you have to wonder if this isn't another sign that the Bengals should be more aware of the area and their loyal fanbase. On Friday a released government report says "the U.S. unemployment rate hit a 26-year high of 10.2 percent last month." The state of Ohio's unemployment rate hovers around 10.1% in September (lost 258,100 jobs in one year). Kentucky's jobless rate is 10.9% and Indiana's is 9.6% in September. On Tuesday, Ohio voters voted to legalize Casinos by six points in an effort to bring money and jobs to the state. Hamilton county recently passed a $209 million general fund budget, which is $29.6 million less than last year and the smallest since 1999. An October 20 Middletown Journal article writes that jobless numbers in Hamilton County are at 10.8%, which actually feel from the previous month of 11.6%.

In one respect, the Bengals are helping out by assuring tickets are sold in one way or another. While Cincinnatians are struggling to sellout games at Paul Brown Stadium, the fifth home game will ultimately be sold out. However, the home games this year have mostly hosted teams that are in playoff races, such as Denver and Houston (wild card), or games with bigger fanbases like Pittsburgh and Chicago.

If we base on what we've seen this year, I find it hard to believe that the Bengals will be able to sellout their remaining home games. Cleveland could sellout, because most football fans in this state are either Bengals fans or Browns fans. After that, the Bengals host the Lions and Chiefs to close out the home schedule. Yikes.

With the economy and some many that remain jobless, I think it's time that the Bengals examine the possibility of reduced ticket prices for the remainder of this year. As of now, games against the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, the cheapest tickets remain at $64 through Ticket Master. Add to area parking, as well as concessions, and your price could easily top $90. And of course, you're not going alone. So let's add a few tickets for friends and/or family. Many can't justify that cost of even the cheapest ticket available.

Think of the advantages. Cheaper tickets means availability to more people, maybe even children who could become the future generation of Bengals fans who would buy tickets in 2020. Do the Bengals recognize that? It's a great public relations effort, with a fanbase that really doesn't trust the Bengals front office and hasn't for years. If they're looking at the bottom line, the Bengals won't have to eat the cost of those unsold tickets.

Now we'd be trivial not to mention that the Bengals wiped out the remaining tickets against the Ravens and plan to donate them. That's a great start. While they're looking to help out, the Bengals should keep trying, reaching out to a community that's struggling right now, even though the citizens of Hamilton County gave the team one hell of a stadium deal. Let's reciprocate the love a little for fans who could use a little help to support cheering for the team they've cheered for all of our lives.

Fanblogs Live - Week 10

Double digit weeks already? Where did the season go?

Maybe someone should look into spring JV football. Or maybe to help with Title IX, spring woman's football.

Again the rules are:
1) No imposters.
2) No personal attacks/vendettas.

For those selected for (and choosing to accept) the role of producer, the following additional rules apply:
1) DON'T HIT THE RED CIRCLE WITH AN X IN IT THAT CLOSES THE CHAT
2) Say what you would say if you were not a producer
3) Approve people joining the chat
4) Uploaded audio longer than 30 seconds will be ended early

If you wish to apply to be a producer, be selected as a panelist, open a coveritlive account, upload an avatar and send us your e-mail. If this is not self explanatory you are probably not qualified to be a producer.

If you want to participate using twitter you may by adding #fanblogslive to your tweets (while you are waiting in line at the hot dog stand during halftime for example). Not sure how you can read what everyone is saying that way, but you can get your comments in for sure.

Enjoy week 7! May the best teams (or your team) win!
