A Belated Congratulations to Anthony Herrera

A couple of weeks ago, Vikings offensive lineman Anthony Herrera officially became a United States citizen.

Herrera, a native of Trinidad & Tobago, has lived in the U.S. since he was 14 years old.  As he turns 28 this June, he's spent over half of his life in the United States.  Coach Brad Childress accompanied Herrera to the ceremony, as none of his family were in town for the big day.

As someone who has seen the process close up. . .Mrs. Gonzo came to me by way of Australia and is going through the process now. . .I know it can be long and drawn out.  But Herrera persisted, much the same as he did while going from an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee to signing a big-money extension with the Vikings last season and being the unquestioned starter at right guard for the Beloved Purple.

So here's to you, Mr. Herrera!  Congratulations on your outstanding accomplishment.

What if

What if I told you that your quarterback, through the equivalent of the first 4 games of his career, completed 61% of his passes, throwing 6 touchdowns and only 1 interception.  What if those games were played with 2nd and 3rd team offenses and receivers who shouldn't be allowed to look at a football.  What if the opposing team were playing their starters in hopes of winning the game?

Ladies and gentlemen... Jim Sorgi.

I've seen a lot of "Sorgi sucks" comments around here the past few months and I just don't get it.  Is everyone pissed that we lost to the Titans?  Do you really think that was on his shoulders?  We gave Peyton a free pass in the New England game when he was throwing to Moorehead and Aromashodu, so why is Sorgi blamed?  The guy has thrown 126 passes in his career and we're ready to evaluate him?  We're ready to get rid of a QB who's only lost one fumble and thrown one interception in his entire career????  I'm just struggling to figure out what he's done wrong.

Now, I'm not saying he's the 2nd coming of Peyton Manning, but who are you going to get that's better than Sorgi?  You can waste a draft pick on a QB, but why?  He'll be 32 before Peyton retires.

Would you really feel comfortable with anyone else under center besides Manning?  Honestly, it doesn't matter who's back there if Manning isn't.  I say we use the draft to build depth at positions who might actually have a chance at making the active roster.

If you disagree... don't forget to enter your own Mock Draft in the challenge.

Mock Draft Database Updated

If you'll look over to the left, you'll see that the Mock Draft Database is now broken up into three different categories.  The categories are based on the way the folks at HailRedskins have them formatted.

-All of the sites that have "Pro"next to them at HR.com are listed under the "Professional Mock Drafts" category.
-A selection of sites. . .because there's no way I can do the 200+ that the HR folks do. . .is listed under the "Non-Professional Mock Draft" heading.
-Finally, there are some SBNation sites that have done community mock drafts, where the readers of the site conduct the entire draft themselves.  Those are listed under "SBNation Community Mock Drafts."  Right now, counting the one that's going on at Mocking the Draft, there are seven of those.  It's interesting to see what fans of other teams perceive that teams should do in the draft. . .but in the SBNation world, there seems to be a bit of a consensus.

What, you thought I was going to give it away here?  Not a chance. . .go click on the page and see for yourselves!

Not a whole lot of other news going on at the moment, folks. . .if anything comes up, we'll have something on it later.  In the meantime, continue enjoying your weekend!

Update [2008-4-12 17:20:31 by Gonzo]:

Also, if you signed up for Goal Line Blitz through the link you got from this site, could you please log into your account and mess around for a bit? I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Reviewing Past Drafts: 2002

Something I started doing a few years ago was looking back on drafts, from 6 or so years past. I started with 1999, which review you can read here, and have also done 2001. So, what did the Titans’ 2002 draft look like?

And the Bengals are down to four ends

The Bengals are down to four defensive ends after Jimmy Verdon was released Friday. Antwan Odom signed a five year deal in March to become -- we're simply projecting here -- a situational pass rusher. The other bookend likely starting kickoff weekend is Robert Geathers. Both ends are signed through 2012. That leaves Jonathan Fanene and Frostee Rucker as the back ups which, in all reality, isn't that strong.

Undoubtedly the team will draft an end. Perhaps two if not three and let Rucker do what he does best. Not play.

Colts re-sign Matt Giordano, make bloggers assume
they will not draft a safety

For the first time in, like, a gazillion years, I don't think the Colts need to draft a safety. Yesterday, the team re-signed safety Matt Giordano to a contract with terms not yet disclosed. Giordano made a significant leap from 2006 to 2007. He started 5 games in 2007 (including one or Bob Sanders) and the defense didn't miss a beat. In the opener against the Saints, he returned a Drew Brees INT 83 yards for a TD.

Giordano is also one of the few Colts who can actually play special teams well. Him, Darrell Reid, and another safety named Melvin Bullitt make up the corps of the special teams coverage unit. No, that's not ideal, but Giordano is one of the good coverage guys, and it's a good thing he was re-signed.

Giordano provides quality depth at safety (he can play both positions), and we all know his speed gives Indy an extra dimension on defense and special teams. With Giordano, Bob, Bethea, Bullitt, Brandon Condren, and Marlin Jackson (as an emergency safety) I see absolutely no reason for Indy to draft a safety later this month.

None.

Zero.

Nada.

If they do, it's because they're bored.

Safety is one of the deeper areas o the football team, and adding more guys means that other areas (DE, RB, WR, TE) are not getting the attention they require.

Falcoholic Draft Countdown: Washington Redskins,
#21

I'm taking the somewhat unusual step of breaking a tie with this based solely on my own judgment. I think the Bucs are more likely to take Devin Thomas than Early Doucet, so that's what's going to happen. Clearly, either is a bit of a reach for this Bucs team, but that voting couldn't have worked out in any less of a convenient way.

Next up are the Washington Redskins, who are in a weird position of their own. After years of splurging in free agency, the 'Skins are left in the position of needing a little bit of everything. Big items on the wish list include help on the offensive line, in the secondary, and through the receiving corps. Hogs Haven has you covered for all your Redskin needs on this one.

Click below to reach the poll and comments.

1. Chris Long, DE, Miami Dolphins
2. Jake Long, OT, St. Louis Rams
3. Glenn Dorsey, DT, Atlanta Falcons
4. Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders
5. Ryan Clady, OT, Kansas City Chiefs
6. Vernon Gholston, LB/DE, New York Jets
7. Leodis McKelvin, CB, New England Patriots
8. Matt Ryan, QB, Baltimore Ravens
9. Sedrick Ellis, DT, Cincinnati Bengals
10. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, New Orleans Saints
11. Malcolm Kelly, WR, Buffalo Bills
12. Chris Williams, OT, Denver Broncos
13. Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Carolina Panthers
14. Jeff Otah, OT, Chicago Bears
15. Derrick Harvey, DE, Detroit Lions
16. Mike Jenkins, CB, Arizona Cardinals
17. Phillip Merling, DE, Minnesota Vikings
18. Jonathan Stewart, RB, Houston Texans
19. DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Eagles
20. Devin Thomas, WR, Tampa Bay Bucs
