It's true, I forgot how much I love hockey

Right now the Washington Capitals are playing the Philadelphia Flyers in game seven of the Stanley Cup quarterfinals in Washington DC. The Capitals rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force a game seven last night on two third period goals by our man Alex the Great, Alex Ovechkin.

Looks like Michigan's Jake Long is the #1 overall
pick this year

According to Michael David Smith of AOL Fanhouse:

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to a contract with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and will sign him to a contract with $30 million guaranteed, multiple media outlets are reporting.

I don't think many saw this coming. The consensus seemed to be that Chris Long from Virginia would go #1, but I guess Bill Parcells feels Jake Long can lock down the LT spot for the Dolphins for years to come.

Obviously, this completely changes the draft. Look for teams to try and trade out of the top 10.

Congratulations to Eddie DeBartolo, 2008 Bay Area
Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

Eddie DeBartolo, easily one of the most beloved former owners in all of professional sports was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame last night. An interesting note is that he's the first non-player/non-coach ever inducted. As 49ers fans, I think it's safe to say we're not surprised. DeBartolo was certainly wildly appreciated during his time as owner, and considering some of the issues of team management in the last decade, he's probably even more appreciated now.

Two nights ago, a "star-studded" private event was held for DeBartolo that saw ALL the greats in 49ers history honoring the man who turned a down-trodden franchise into one of the greatest NFL dynasties of all time. For those interested, there was a Q&A with DeBartolo covering everything from the current 49ers to getting back into ownership to potentially entering Canton some day. I've heard rumors he's been trying to get involved in an LA ownership group, but who knows how that will play out. Even though he was not a player or coach, if he did get back into ownership, it would be odd seeing the 49ers face an Eddie DeBartolo-owned team. In the meantime, he's started a player representation firm among many other things. His firm actually represents DeSean Jackson and 49ers target Gosder Cherilus, so there's a decent chance McCloughan and Nolan could be across the negotiating table from a DeBartolo agent.

It's certainly good to see things working out so well for Eddie DeBartolo, although considering his business and sports successes previously, it's no surprise. DeBartolo will be introducing Fred Dean for the Hall of Fame later this summer and hopefully the near future will see Eddie DeBartolo being introduced by Carmen Policy or one of his former players as a Hall of Fame inductee.

UPDATE II: Alright, alright. So, the report was truthful now.

"Once I actually read what was reported, I have to be truthful and say that the story is accurate," Lewis told ESPN. "Unfortunately, I didn't read it until after our press conference."

So the Bengals DID turn down the offer. I think. I think my head is going to explode. Alas, everyone laughs harder at our silly little team.

UPDATE: Marvin Lewis denies that the Bengals have received any trade offers from the Redskins for Chad Johnson. Not just the Redskins. ANY-one. The Bengals are vehemently denying that any trade offer has taken place. This Washington Post blog writes that " the Redskins are prepared to guarantee Johnson about $21 million as part of a new contract."

The Pro Football Talk guys are adamantly claiming tampering charges because Oil Slick and the Washington Redskins have a "very strong relationship" and that "a situation like this presents the prime example of how unauthorized communications with a player who belongs to another team can undermine that team’s relationship with its player"

Let's go back to that known $21 million guarantee figure in the Washington Post. The Pro Football Talk guys conclude that "the Redskins apparently are doing is 1000 times worse than the conduct that formed the basis for the Bears tampering allegations against the 49ers. In our opinion, the Bengals should file tampering charges against the Redskins today, if for no reason other than to get the Redskins to back off."

ORIGINAL: ESPN is reporting that the Bengals refused a Redskins offer that could have given the Bengals two first round picks in 2008 and 2009. The deal was for the first-round pick in 2008 and a third-round pick in 2009. But if Johnson reached certain performance benchmarks, the 2009 pick could have been upgraded to a first round pick.

SB Nation's own John Morgan, of Field Gulls fame, scored a nice interview with Notre Dame DT Trevor Laws. Here's a bit:

JM: Watching tape I notice you frequently use a compact spin move, how did you develop that move? Can you describe any other pass rush moves you employ and in what situations they're most effective?
TL: I have been using that move on and off for the last 4 years. This year it was my go-to move. I started to develop it with my old d line coach Greg Mattison. Other moves I use are bull, jab ole, and bite and go.
JM: What are some of the challenges involved with playing both end and tackle? Did you ever feel out of place?
TL: It was a big surprise to me that I was going to have to play end in a 3/4 my final year. During the spring I definitely struggled with my new position. It is a totally different technique than playing a 1 gap. Most plays you have to just sit back and read the play, and it was tough to get used to. As the season came along I felt much more comfortable with it and ended up having a great year playin? both end and tackle.
