Mocking my mock drafting

Last weekend, I asked for your advice in a couple mock drafts I would be participating in. I’ve already mentioned I selected Kentwan Balmer in the MVN mock draft, so this post is about the 2008 FO reader mock draft. And in the first round there, I … selected Kentwan Balmer. I [...]

Know Your Colts History: How about this prospect

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I've been a huge fan of BBS's draft profiles throughout the off-season.  I'm not the biggest draft buff, so these have been a huge, huge help to me.  My one gripe is that he never chronicled my new favorite prospect, linebacker Donald Thomas.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand why he probably didn't do it.  Guys from Eastern Illinois don't traditionally get a lot of pre-draft coverage, but at 5-10, 237 pounds, he fits the billing for the speedy, undersized LB that Polian and Dungy use heavily in the Cover 2.  Although he isn't projected to be selected in the draft, many think he could make it as an undrafted free agent, even Donald will admit as much:

“Being drafted is not even an option for me,” he said. “I’m definitely looking for a free agent deal. My agent, he’s just putting my name out there, just letting these guys know I’m from a small school but I’m some kind of a big-time player, just trying to get me back on the field. That’s all I want is one opportunity to showcase my talent.”

Later on he goes on to mention that the Colts have expressed interest in doing just that, so there's a good chance that he could be around for mini-camp. One of things that could keep him around is his hitting ability, some say he hits like a car. Actually, check that, he was hit by a car :

Maybe the question should be how badly is the car damaged after accidentally hitting linebacker Donald Thomas.

Eastern Illinois’ pro-football hopeful star reports to be OK after the mishap on the Monday before this weekend’s NFL draft.

“He says it wasn’t as bad as the hit he took against Tennessee Tech,” EIU defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni said. “He said that felt like he was hit by a truck.”

Monday’s accident at the corner of Fourth Street and Grant when Thomas was jogging still threw him a scare.

“I felt like I did getting hurt at Murray State in the most important season in my life,” said Thomas, who missed a game and was slowed in others by that ankle injury the past season. “Now here the week when I find out my fate in football I get hit by a car. But I think I’m all right.”

Thankfully, he appears to be OK, so that shouldn't hurt his chances to be signed next week.  I really hope he signs with the Colts, if for no other reason so that he can compare getting hit by a car with getting hit by Darrell Reid.  Something tells me he'd rather take his chances being Frogger.

2008 Niners Nation Draft Prediction Contest

Editor's Note 2:05am: The updated first round order is in the entry body of this so it doesn't take up too much space on the front page.  Click on comments to see the updated draft order.

Draftbattle_medium

The 2008 NFL Draft is 10 days away and now seems as good a time as any to get the Draft Prediction Contest up and running.  I'm creating this as a diary I'll promote to the front page for today.  Then I'll move it back to the diaries so it stays up top as the thread for entering predictions.

It certainly won't be easy to get all of them accurate so we've developed some rules that should make things a little more interesting.  The specific point totals aren't final, but here's what we're looking at, along with an example to make it clear:

  1. For every correct player picked in the exact spot, you get 2 points - Pretty straight forward - You say the Bills take DeSean Jackson and they do, you get 2 points.
  2. If you predict the correct position taken, you get 1 point - You say the 49ers will take Gosder Cherilus (OT, BC) and they take Jeff Otah (OT, Pitt), you get 1 point.
  3. If you predict offense or defense correct, you get 1/2 point - You say the Texans will select a running back and they take an offensive lineman, you'll get 1/2 point.
  4. If a team trades out of the first round completely, everyone loses out on the pick.
  5.  Obviously, you'll be predicting all 31 first round picks.

Now, if you make your predictions today and then next week decide you want to make a change, here's the process.  You'll make your prediction in this specific thread.  If you want to make a change, just reply to your specific comment with the changes.  Do NOT add a new comment at the bottom as that will clutter things up.

This is kind of a work in progress, so if anybody has suggestions for improving this I'm all ears.  Additionally, our boy HowTheyScored will be helping to keep score so everything should be on the up-and-up.  Best of luck to all.  For now the winner gets a front page post, but I'm trying to come up with something better.  Keep your fingers crossed.

What was that condition on the conditional
third-round pick

Just a real quick amendment regarding the refused trade between the Bengals and the Redskins for Chad Johnson. For sure, the Bengals would have received a first-round pick in 2008. The conditional third-round pick was based on receptions by Chad Johnson during the 2008 campaign. If he caught 80 passes, the Bengals would have received a second-round pick. If Johnson caught 95 passes, the Bengals were awarded a first-round. Not that it really matters, but a little knowledge never hurt no one.

The Day That Football Died

For those of you that don’t live in the greater northern tundra, or if you’re just a Brett Favre/Green Bay Packer fan, you have to watch this video. If you’ve never been here, this is pretty much what everyone sounds like when they talk. Just not as melodic. And usually uglier (sorry [...]

If Ellis is gone, could the Bengals draft RB
Rashard Mendenhall

John Clayton writes in a Wednesday blog post:

Mixing it up: Don't be surprised if the Bengals look at halfback Rashard Mendenhall if Sedrick Ellis goes in the first picks. Though running back isn't a need position for the Bengals, the return of Odell Thurman minimizes the need for a linebacker such as Keith Rivers. There would be great value at the cornerback position at No. 10, but the Bengals have drafted well at cornerback the past couple of years. As much as the team would like to help the defense, Mendenhall could be an exciting addition to the offense.

Not only would this blogger be surprised, but he'll bolt down the doors, buy two weeks supply of Ramen noodles and pray the riots don't barge down the front door. It's not an indictment on Rashard Mendenhall who Matt Miller says of the Illinois power back:

Mendenhall is a rare power runner in a spread option offense. He has the ability to run inside and out, with the speed to break away from defenders. Just ask USC. He will need to adjust to lining up behind the quarterback in the NFL, but Mendenhall brings a lot of potential to the position. He is likely to be a top 20 pick.

Kind of reminds you of Jeff Rowe, doesn't it? Draft a guy that's totally out of place because they played in a non-NFL style offense.

Whether or not it's the right move, Cincinnati will be in flames if they pick an offensive guy in the first round. Again, it might even be the best move in the past 20 years. But we're opinionated folk that believe our minds are far more superior than anyone in the Bengals (or the Reds, for that matter) front office. And in our minds, we believe that drafting defense in the first round is a must. If anything, to calm the city folk.

A reader on Chick Ludwig's blog commented on the prospect of drafting Mendenhall:

Did you see the one mock draft (via Yahoo sports) that had the Bengals selecting RB Mendenhall from Illinois in the first round? Oh my gosh! If they do that, I will need a new television because I will put my foot through the one I am watching!!

If you have an analog-only signal antenna on an antiquated television, this might actually work out for ya, buddy. Going back to Clayton's blog, he writes that Mario Manningham visited the Bengals last week. Obvious second-round pick. If I were a betting man, I'd think the Bengals are all but certainly going after a wide receiver in the second round. But the beauty of draft predictions is that it's like meteorology. No matter how experienced or educated you are, you can change your mind within two hours of said prediction and still not lose an ounce of credibility. Well, that's assuming a nerd like me actually has some to begin with. But you know. So is life.

But if Clayton's vision comes true and the Bengals go after a running back because Ellis is gone, and then they turn around and go after a wide receiver, well, I'm leaving town for a month. I hear Minnesota is nice this time of year. Any takers? Two offensive players on Saturday? Man, that would be pretty rough. Though on the upside, this place will go through the roof. I'm sure everyone will have something to say. But come back in two hours. I might predict something totally different.
