Add to myYahoo! The Packers have a 20-year history of picking up quarterbacks on the cheap. They acquired Brett Favre from Atlanta for a draft pick and some Pokemon cards. They got Aaron Rodgers after draft-day geniuses like the Detroit Lions (perennial selectors of wide receivers and always quarterback deficient) opted not to take the projected [...]

You'll recall hat, a week or two ago, I put a post up here about a football-based MMORPG (Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Game) called Goal Line Blitz. I know a lot of you signed up for it, but if you didn't, I've got a bit of an added twist now.
Our friend sully from Sports-Boards.net has managed to procure ownership of a team in one of the Goal Line Blitz leagues, and is putting a team of human players together, kicking all of the computer-controlled players to the curb in the process. The team has played its first game, but sully tells me that the team is still looking for one starter (an outside linebacker) and depth at pretty much every position. Many of the people that are on the team are Vikings fans or fans of other NFC North teams, and all in all it's pretty enjoyable.
So, if you'd like to sign up for the game, head on over and check it out. It's free, it's fun, and it's FOOTBALL. After you've created your players. . .or even if you signed up for the game when I put the link out the first time. . .shoot a Private Message to sully (which is his Goal Line Blitz user name) and tell them that Gonzo sent you. He'll have a look at your player and, if everything checks out, will attempt to secure your services via trade.
The Minnesota Lumberjacks need a few good men. . .or even women. Hell, we're not picky. Hope to see you on the gridiron!

I want to preface this by explaining exactly why I'm disappointed in this draft. I think it's only fair, given that I'm going to be pretty critical of some of these picks, though I don't actually hate this draft as much as I thought I would.
There was a clear expectation that things would be very different this year. The way the Patriots and Jaguars built their teams, I thought it fair to assume that Dimitroff and Smith would build strength along the lines. I'm as guilty as anybody of placing faith in that approach, and everything I passed on to you guys dismissed Matt Ryan as the prospect chosen at #3. I did that partly because that's what I was hearing and partly, I think, because it's what I so wanted to believe.
After yesterday's portion of the draft, the Falcons still had a chance to redeem themselves. With Ryan, Baker and Lofton, the team had a potential QB, LT and MLB for the future. Though Ryan wasn't my first choice, he still does fill a glaring need. I was very disappointed they didn't pick Glenn Dorsey, yes. But I also began to think that Dimitroff would be snatching up offensive linemen and a defensive tackle later on. No spot seemed more apt than the fifth round for hulking DT Red Bryant.
The Falcons began the third round by getting classic Cover 2 corner Chevis Jackson. While Jackson doesn't have huge speed, he tackles well and has quality coverage instincts. I didn't really have a beef with the pick; at worst, I thought he was a candidate to move to safety. The Falcons then took Louisville wide receiver Harry Douglas, who doesn't fill a critical position of need. I still love the pick because I think Douglas stands as good or better a chance of stepping in opposite Roddy White as L-Rob. At worst, he should be an upgrade in the slot from Mike Jenkins. So far, two quality picks, but no sign of offensive or defensive linemen. There would be no more until the fifth round for the Falcons, leading me to worry that all the quality linemen would be off the board.
Then the fifth round rolled around the Falcons did something so awe-inspiring that I nearly soiled my shorts. They drafted two listed outside linebackers in the fifth round. In a fit of rage, I almost clawed my own eyes out. You guys later pointed out that the team probably drafted both to play safety and defensive end, which made them both infinitely more defensible. Still, I counted no defensive tackles or offensive linemen here, and it turned out I wasn't getting any.
Thomas Brown will take over at running back for Jason Snelling, Wilrey Fontenot can probably be a capable dime back (I hope) and Keith Zinger does fill a need at tight end and come with a terrific name. That finished up a draft that turned out to be sadly based on some esoteric draft philosophy that I guess my little mind is too weak to wrap around.
What I guess I'm angriest about is that this was supposed to be a need-based draft. There were no greater needs than along the two lines and at quarterback; the Falcons arguably answered the call at QB and 1/5th of the line. They then proceeded to ignore the basic building blocks of a team for the remaining six rounds.
Maybe the new guys have a lot of faith in Trey Lewis (who I like) and Jonathan Babineaux. Maybe they also think Weiner will be healthy, Clabo will be effective and Blalock will improve. Maybe this is all part of a master plan that's going to take two years and a pair of drafts to complete. I really don't know. What I do know is that we fans had a reasonable expectation for this draft that was not met. If the team has a great explanation for what went on here these last two days, I'll be happy to hear it.
I just need to know that there was a good reason for the way this draft played out.

Well, the feeding frenzy for players that weren't selected with any of the draft's 253 picks has started, and somebody had better call Mr. French and/or Mary J. Blige, because the Vikings have made this a family affair.
According to Judd Zulgad of the Star-Tribune, here are the Undrafted Free Agents that the Vikings have agreed with:
Husain Abdullah S Washington State
Martail Burnett DE Utah
Leger Douzable DT Central Florida
Marcus Griffin S Texas
Steven Hauschka K NC State
Erin Henderson LB Maryland
Nate Jones WR Texas
Travis Key CB Michigan State
Jeremy “J” Leman LB Illinois
Tim Mattran C Stanford
Drew Radovich T USC
Darius Reynaud WR West Virginia
Brandon Sumrall CB S Mississippi
Marcus Walker CB Oklahoma
Kyle Wright QB Miami (Fla.)
Albert Young RB Iowa
Erin Henderson is the younger brother of Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson, while Marcus Griffin is the younger brother of Vikings cornerback Cedric Griffin. Both players attended the same college as their older brothers did. Gee. . .you suppose the Vikings had the inside track on those two signings?
Looking at where The Sporting News had each of them ranked, Reynaud was listed as their 15th best WR and the highest WR not drafted. Henderson was their 8th ranked outside linebacker. Leman was the #13 inside linebacker, and Griffin was the #14 safety in their listings.
Not sure how many of these guys are actually going to have a shot at making the roster, but it's good to see that the Beloved Purple didn't just sit on their hands after the final name was called out.
Thanks for the great weekend, everybody. Despite not seeing a lot of action, the Vikings made the draft weekend a pretty successful one in my book, as well as a pretty successful one for the Daily Norseman. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday night, and we'll see you all back here tomorrow!

Add to myYahoo! After 2 days and give picks, the San Francisco 49ers draft is complete and the time for irrational and rational analysis is upon us. Right off the bat, I'll say this is a very tough draft to grade. The general consensus was the 49ers had starting needs on the offensive line, the defensive line and at outside linebacker, with additional depth needs at wide receiver and in the secondary. The prognisticators (yours truly included) felt Quentin Groves would be taken if he was there in the first or second round. Offensive tackle seemed a sure bet to be addressed. Many felt (or maybe it was just wanted) wide receiver would be addressed relatively early. And the actual outcome? No offensive tackles were taken, a short not so fast wide receiver with some issues was taken in the sixth round and they addressed OLB in the seventh round with a guy who is more likely to be a special teams start than an impact outside linebacker.
I will not say I'm disappointed or think it was a bad draft. Aside from the usual cliches about waiting 3 years to fully evaluate a draft, I think there are some good things to come out of this, depending on how you view the players taken. If you view this as a lot of reaches, you're going to be disappointed until they prove it on the field. I can see how the team appeared to reach when other quality talents were still around. I think my opinion is more of disappointment in who the 49ers could have taken, rather that who they actual took.
While plenty of new questions arise, we've at least gotten some answers. I'll deal with questions raised later, but for now I just want to look at questions answered. And feel free to add any I miss.
1. The 49ers are happy with their receivers. Yes they added Josh Morgan, but we all know how 6th rounders usually work out. I'd say right I'm happier with Isaac Bruce, Bryant Johnson and Arnaz Battle as the 1-2-3 than last year with DJack, Battle and Ashley Lelie. While it's not the greatest show on turf, I think there are sufficient weapons on the field.
2. Joe Staley and Jonas Jennings are your tackles next season. After going guard with Rachal, I was kind of hoping the 49ers would grab OT Anthony Collins in the 4th round, but it was not to be. I suppose they could work Rachal over to tackle, but I don't see that happening.
3. McNolan has tethered themselves to Smith/Hill (with a little O'Sullivan thrown in for good measure). They could bring in an undrafted free agent, but I think it's safe to say the QB competition is officially set for this summerinside linebacker spot
4. Reggie Smith will be returning kicks and/or punts. Maurice Hicks was quite solid on special teams, but the 49ers have not had the game-breaking kick/punt returning in ages. It'd be pretty sweet to see Reggie Smith develop that aspect of the 49ers special teams. (Just corrected on Rossum. I still think Smith will get a chance to make an impact in the return game.)
5. Eric Heitmann would seem to be a goner after this season. Heitmann really struggled to bounce back from his broken leg at the end of 2006. Who knows if Cody Wallace is the answer, but he'll definitely get every chance to prove it. Heitmann had very solid stretches in his time with the 49ers, but it is quickly approaching the time to move on.

A project at a position of need
The Redskins used their seventh pick in the 2008 NFL draft to select safety Kareem Moore from Nicholls State. Although Reed Doughty and LaRon Landry were a great team last season another player was needed to fill an opening. From nfl.com's profile on Kareem:
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 213 lbs
Pros: solid physique, stays in position, good field instincts, provides solid coverage in zone, plays well against the run, quick study against a deep playbook, solid hitter, has good vision for the QB, good hands for the ball.
Cons: lacks explosiveness, needs to improve in man to man coverage, does not play as quickly as his timed speed, needs to keep play in front of him, questions about the level of his compeition.
Curly R quick take: might have liked a linebacker or another offensive lineman with this pick but I won't argue with a safety. Neither Pierson Prioleau nor Omar Stoutmire has proven to be a reliable every down player at the position and adding Kareem to the mix of LaRon Landry and Reed Doughty might be good for the position. In an ironic lol, the nfl.com profile of Kareem compares him to Ryan Clark, the former Redskins and current Steelers safety who was at the center of the winter of discontent with now deceased safety Sean Taylor.
